Nattokinase
Supplements
Nattokinase
supplements have been gaining attention from many medical experts due
to their potential in acting as natural alternatives to anticoagulant
medications like Warfarin. Although not yet proven, nattokinase has
shown in several studies its capacity of reducing the risks of blood
clot build up, which could either make the affected individual
healthier or prolong his or her life. This has been used in Japan for
years, but many are still new to this particular natural
supplement.
So
what is nattokinase?
Nattokinase is derived from natto, a
Japanese food that is made by
fermenting soybeans. These soybeans are added with a bacterium called
Bacillus natto, a form of good bacteria whose action in the soybeans
creates the enzyme nattokinase.
Nattokinase supplements are claimed to
help in preventing thrombosis or
the build up of blood clots or thrombus despite the absence of a wound,
which could eventually lead to partial or total blood flow blockage.
Nattokinase is said to work by helping in dissolving fibrin.
Fibrin is an enzyme that is responsible
for gluing together the red
blood cells and platelets, which make blood clots. By dissolving
fibrin, nattokinase is able to soften these formed clumps of platelets
and red blood cells.
The ability of nattokinase supplements in
dissolving blood clots is
often compared to intravenously-administered medications such as
urokinase and streptokinase, which are used specifically after a stroke
or heart attack. However, nattokinase, which are orally taken, works in
a slower process.
A team of Japanese researchers performed a
study on the fibrinolytic
effect of nattokinase. The study composed of 12 individuals, which have
been stimulated with an artificial blood clot. Subjects who were
administered of 200 grams of natto had the artificial blood clot
dissolved half of the time that it took those without
supplementation.
While nattokinase supplements are being
argued as being whether
effective or not in dissolving clots, many experts believe that its
ability could further be enhanced when combined with another supplement
called Serrapeptase, which enzyme is derived from the silkworm Bombyx
Mori. Serrapeptase is claimed to have strong anti-inflammatory effects,
which is beneficial for fighting blood clots, since inflammation
increases the amount of fibrin in the blood.
Although Nattokinase supplements are
considered generally safe, not all
people could take them. Individuals suffering from hypotension or low
blood pressure should not take them, as they could reduce blood
pressure to an unhealthy level. This should also be avoided by those
who are taking aspirin or other medications that may promote blood
clotting.
