Nattokinase and Serrapeptase
There have been a lot of natural
supplements that have been gaining attention in the medical field, and
among them are nattokinase and serrapeptase. Both of these natural
supplements have been claimed of providing various benefits to its
user. Nattokinase and serrapeptase have been used by many as
alternatives to anticoagulants such as Heparin, Coumadin, and Warfarin
because of their believed ability to prevent the build up of blood
Nattokinase is an enzyme derived from
Natto, which is a type of Japanese food created from fermented
soybeans. Natto is processed through fermentation with the addition of
Bacillus natto, a type of good bacteria. The action of this bacterium
allows nattokinase to be produced through fermentation of the
Serratiopeptidase or serrapeptase is a
form of enzyme taken from the intestine of the silkworm Bombyx Mori.
This enzyme is responsible for dissolving the cocoon of an emerging
Many people have been taking the
combination of nattokinase and serrapeptase, as they are believed to
fight the formation of unnecessary blood clots, called thrombosis.
Nattokinase’s ability to dissolve fibrin, the enzyme responsible
for ‘gluing’ red blood cells and platelets that result in
blood clots, has been tested in a study composed of 12 subjects. A
blood clot was artificially created. The result was half the time was
required for the clot to dissolve in subjects who took 200 grams of
Natto than in those who did not take any.
On the other hand, Serrapeptase is
believed to help those suffering from atherosclerosis, or plaque build
up within the arterial walls, causing blockage in blood flow.
Serrapeptase has shown in some studies its ability to fight
inflammation, and holds anti-edemic properties. Experts believe that
the combination of nattokinse and serrapeptase is ideal for preventing
thrombosis, since inflammation is known to cause an increase in
fibrinogen levels, which increases the risk of a clot.
Nattokinase and serrapeptase has been seen
to produce no side effects since their use in Asian and European
countries. However, this combination is not recommended for every
person. Those who experience bleeding disorders like hemophilia or
hemorrhagic diathesias are not advised of taking these
These should not be taken by individuals
who recently suffered or undergone ulcer, major trauma, surgery, or
hemorrhoids. Nattokinase should also be avoided by people who had
intracranial bleeding or ischemic stroke. There are also several
medications that could interact with either nattokinase or serrapeptase
and may result in severe complications.
