Angina pectoris or simply chest pain, is considered to be one of the most common symptom for different conditions, but often seen in people who have heart problems. Angina may be classified into two which are stable angina and unstable angina. Stable angina is considered to be the most common of the two. The most common cause of angina is the build up of plaques in the linings of the arteries. This condition is called atherosclerosis. These plaques are caused by excess fats, smoking and other debris which flows together with blood. People who develop plaques in the arterial walls have the tendency to cut the blood supply going to the heart which causes chest pains. When the heart does not get enough blood and oxygen, irreversible, serious damages may occur. However, it may be treated with angina medicine and lifestyle changes, but for some, surgeries may be needed.

Medications such as nitroglycerin, beta blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme or ACE inhibitors, and Aspirin are the most common prescribed for this condition. Nitroglycerin is administer sublingually. It functions by decreasing the heart’s demand for oxygen and controls muscle spasm. Beta blockers work by blocking the function of adrenaline, which will result to lowered blood pressure, decreased heart rate and reduced the force exerted by the heart. ACE inhibitors help by relaxing the heart, therefore reducing its stress, and aspirin works by thinning blood and making it easier to flow towards the heart. This drug also prevents blood clots from forming.

All these angina medicine may have different side effects to consumers. Before taking any of them, consulting a doctor is recommended. Doctors will initially run tests to determine the underlying cause of angina then will make treatment plans. They will be giving patients information regarding the drug’s benefits and side effects and will also explain the dosages to each patient since not all people react the same way to drugs. This is done to prevent drug misuse and disease complication.
